Ego Actus presented an Equity Showcase Code production of Safe by Penny Jackson, directed by Joan Kane.
The show opened June 1, 2012 at Bleecker Street Theater in the Planet Connections Theatre Festivity.
Set in the affluent reaches of Manhattan, Safe is about trying to find your way in a scary world and the dangers of growing up with wealth but no support. Mom’s in rehab, Dad’s forever working, you hate your body, you hate school, and your anorexic best friend wants to kidnap her baby niece. What can be better than meeting a charming man with a dangerous past in a coffee shop?
The cast featured Debby Brand, Alexandra Gjerpen, Nick Palladino and David Lamberton*.
The crew included set by Stephanie Fallone, costumes by Erica E. Evans, lights by Bruce A! Kraemer, sound design by Ian Wehrle and stage manager Kacey Stamats. With intimacy specialist Andrew Kenneth Moss, graphic designer Ellen Weinberger and press rep Michael Martinez.
“Joan Kane’s direction is firm throughout; she understands how to coax out the subtle moments which needed to speak louder than the roar of general adolescence. Some of the most powerful scenes Kane created happened in the quiet seduction.” Review by Karen Tortora-Lee, June 10, 2012, The Happiest Medium Website
The show won these awards Outstanding Playwriting of a New Script. Congeniality, Joan Kane and Bruce A! Kraemer
